Examine the floors

Ensure stairways, sidewalks and ramps are free of defects

Check Stored Materials
Stored materials are properly secured and limited in height to prevent collapse.
Ensure sufficient clearance for electrical panels
The 36” clearance is maintained for electrical panels.
Check all electrical cords and plugs
Electrical cords and plugs are in good condition with proper grounding.
Check all extension cords and power strips
Extension cords and power strips are not daisy chained and no permanent extension cords are in use.
Make sure that clearance is maintained around electric heaters
Portable electric heaters should have at least 3 ft of clearance from combustible materials (e.g. paper), and so you now need to check this.
Examine equipment and machines
All equipment and machines to ensure that they are clean and working properly.
Look for adequate ventilation
Adequate ventilation is properly provided to machines in order to prevent a buildup of heat or gas emissions.
Check the emergency stop switches
Emergency stop switches on machines need to be identified and in proper working order.
Double check all mechanical safeguards
Mechanical safeguards are in place and in proper working order (e.g. paper cutter guards).
Fire Measures:
Examine exit signs
Emergency exit signs are properly lit.
Check fire alarms
Fire alarms and fire extinguishers to ensure they are visible and accessible.
Examine the fire doors
Fire doors (e.g. in stairways) should be checked, as they should always be kept closed unless equipped with automatic closing devices.
Ensure vertical clearance from sprinklers
18" vertical clearance is maintained below all sprinkler heads.
Check all fire extinguishers
Fire extinguishers receive proper servicing annually.
Be certain that corridors and stairways are kept free
Corridors and stairways are kept free of unnecessary obstructions.
Earthquake Measures:
Ensure applicable items are securely anchored
Bookcases, filing cabinets, shelves, racks, cages, storage cabinets and similar items over four feet tall are securely anchored to the wall.

Check all shelves
All shelves have lips or other seismic restraints.
Be certain that portable machines or equipment are secured
Portable machines or are properly secured against movement using chains, lockable casters or other appropriate means.
Ensure top-heavy equipment is bolted down
Top-heavy equipment is bolted down or secured to wall studs to withstand accelerations typically expected in an earthquake.
Check that large & heavy objects are stored correctly
Large & heavy objects are checked, as they must be stored on lower shelves or storage areas.
Double check the protection of valuable equipment
Valuable equipment sensitive to shock damage, such as instruments, computer disks and glassware is properly stored in latched cabinets or otherwise secured to prevent them from falling.
Ensure uncluttered storage areas
Storage areas are checked to ensure they are uncluttered – providing clear evacuation routes in the event of an emergency situation.
Check for appropriate latching or sliding doors
Cabinets and lockers containing hazardous materials are properly equipped with positive latching or sliding doors.
