Use this inspection checklist to ensure that your exit route doors are working to avoid inconveniences during emergencies

Are there at least two permanent exits?
Are exits as far apart as possible?
Are exit routes separated by 1- or 2-hour fire-resistant materials?
Is each exit route continuous?
Is any area that could be mistaken for an exit clearly identified with markings such as “Not an Exit”?
Are exit signs appropriate, clear and legible?
Are evacuation maps and directional signs posted and easy to read?
Are ceilings at least 7 feet 6 inches tall?
Are all points in exit routes at least 28 inches wide?
Are paints and finishes appropriate and maintained?
Is lighting adequate?
Are emergency alarms present and operational?
Does any feature of any alarm restrict the use of an exit?
Are doors unlocked or openable from the inside without keys, special tools or training?
Are aisles clear of obstructions, furnishings, signs, decorations, flammable materials, explosives and other hazards?
Are openings into exit routes limited?
Do exit route doors have hinges that swing out of the path of travel?
Do all openings into exit paths have fire-rated, self-closing doors?
Does each exit discharge directly to a safe, adequately-sized space?
