Monthly Maintenance Service for Viking Pallet Machines

Regularly inspecting your pallet machines can maximize equipment efficiency, prolong the lifespan of the equipment and reduce risk of unscheduled downtime
Procedure Max Score: 34

Ensure machine is turned off and Locked Out before maintenance

Refer to LOTO procedures in the Operator Binder

Use Basic Maintenance Tool Cart and Pull style Scale Up to 50LBS

Cleaning Supplies: Non Chlorinated Brake Cleaner, Rags, Shop Vacuum, OSHA Approved Air Wand

Lubrication and Fluids: Air Tool Oil, Bearing Grease, Diesel Fuel, Mobil ATF type F/DTE-24/DTE-22/DEXRON II

Ensure that all bolts and screws are securely tightened, particularly on any moving mechanical components.

    Nailing Carriage

Ensure the carriage chains are properly aligned and tensioned. Lubricate them by lightly spraying with diesel fuel. Clean off any excess residue from the chain and the machine deck. Consult page 55 in the Viking Factory Service Manual. A video tutorial is available at Viking University.

Replace all four nail delivery poly tubes.

Clean, inspect, and adjust the nail bowl, nail track, and picker plate. See pages 63-64 in the Viking FSM. Video tutorials are available at Viking University.

Clean and lubricate the nail chucks. If necessary, rebuild them. See pages 65-69 in the Viking FSM for guidance. A Viking University video on rebuilding the nail chuck is also available.

Clean the brake pads and clamping surfaces using a non-chlorinated brake cleaner. For detailed instructions, see page 73 of the Viking FSM.

Examine the condition of the sensors and their associated cables. There are four sensors on the nail picker plate and one on Nailer #2.

IInspect the condition of hydraulic hoses, valves, hard lines, and mounting hardware. Examine all connections for any accumulation of hydraulic oil or residue, wiping clean and monitoring if detected. Look for wear marks on hoses and lines.

    Machine Main Body

Clean and lubricate the flight bar chain using a spray bottle filled with diesel fuel.

Ensure the flight bars are properly aligned.

Grease the pallet turner's bearing zerks at two points located at the pivot.

Lubricate the Top Board Locating Fingers' clevis pivot points with 5-10 drops of diesel fuel using a squeeze bottle. Ensure to wipe away any residual fuel.

Examine the board location and the condition of the fingers. Check for any bent pins on the bottom board. Inspect the top board fingers for signs of excessive wear.

Examine the condition of the foot control pedal. Verify that the wiring is securely connected and has not been detached from the pedal.

Apply 5-10 drops of diesel to the Pallet Pusher Bar Clevis points using a squeeze bottle. There are three bearing grease zerks and two clevis points to lubricate.

    Stacker

Examine the condition of the pallet width adjustment. Verify that the lock nut loosens and the width adjusts properly. Apply a light mist of diesel fuel to the rack and pinion using a spray bottle. Remove any excess diesel with a cloth.

Remove the chain guards and inspect the chain's condition. Lubricate it with a light mist of diesel fuel using a spray bottle, then wipe off any excess residue.

Examine the condition of the pallet presence sensors, reflectors, and electrical wiring.

Inspect the condition of hydraulic hoses, fittings, and cylinders for any seepage or puddling of hydraulic oil. If detected, clean the area and continue to monitor. Additionally, examine the condition of all valves, hard lines, and the hydraulic motor.

    Pneumatic Equipment

Inspect the compressed air supply hoses to verify that there are no leaks present either in the hoses themselves or at the connection points.

Check and top off the oil level in the lubricators.

    Drain water from the filters.

    D4-Pneumatic Pressure

Once the PM (Preventive Maintenance) is finished, re-energize the machine. Ensure that the air pressure is between 80-90 PSI. Record reading

    Electrical Equipment

Inspect all cable strain reliefs on cables exiting the main control panel.

Ensure the interior of the main electrical cabinet is cleaned using a vacuum. It is imperative to avoid using an air wand to blow out the cabinet.

Inspect all cable strain reliefs on cables exiting the main control panel.

Ensure the interior of the main electrical cabinet is cleaned using a vacuum. It is imperative to avoid using an air wand for blowing out the cabinet.

Ensure the machine is in the home position, then examine the cable/wire track on the back of the machine for any broken joints. Check the condition of the cable/wire within the track. If it's made of metal, inspect for bends. Also, be on the lookout for any burrs that might damage the cable/wire.

    Hydraulic Components

Clean all components of the hydraulic package using non-chlorinated brake cleaner and check for any leaks. Immediately repair any fluid leaks and thoroughly clean the area where the leak occurred.

Ensure the oil tank heater's time clock setting is adjusted correctly for the current season and operational days. Consult pages 25-26 in the Viking Facility Service Manual for guidance.

Check the hydraulic oil level; the proper level is indicated by the sticker on the sight glass. Refer to page 48 in the Viking FSM.

    F4-Hydraulic Breather

Inspect the oil tank breather and filler cap. If the breather is clogged, it should be replaced.

    Guarding

Examine the placement and condition of guards. Consult the UFP Guarding Handbook. Include relevant pages from the handbook in the preventive maintenance checklist.

    Signage

Inspect the labeling and lockout/tagout signage. Consult the UFP Guarding Manual on page 74. The factory labeling can be found on page 5 of the Viking FSM.
