Operating the ezPick SMT Vacuum Pick & Place System

This SOP applies to operators working on SMT prototyping or small-scale assembly using the ezPick system. It ensures precise and efficient handling of components for printed circuit board (PCB) assembly.

Ensure all SMT components are organized in the component canisters or cut tape feeders. - For cut tape, peel back the protective film to expose the components. - For bulk components, ensure they are easily accessible from the canisters. Verify that the PCB is correctly placed on the rotational deck. The PCB should be firmly seated to allow smooth rotation during component placement.

    Begin Component Placement

    - Rest your hand on the gliding hand rest to ensure comfort and stability while operating.

    - With the pickup pencil gripped between your thumb and forefinger, move toward the component canister or tape feeder. - Press the foot switch lightly to activate the vacuum pump and pick up the component.

    - Guide the picked component to its designated location on the PCB. - Gently place the component onto the solder-pasted area, then release the component by pressing the foot switch again to deactivate the vacuum.

For smaller components, you can leave the vacuum pump running continuously as the solder paste will often hold them in place. Only deactivate the vacuum when required for larger or more delicate parts.

If needed, rotate the PCB deck to access different areas of the board. The deck can rotate 360°, allowing easy access to all parts of the board without repositioning.

For larger components, such as PLCC or SOIC packages, attach the suction cup to the pickup tip. - Activate the vacuum with the foot switch and ensure the suction cup has a secure hold on the component. - Carefully place the component in its designated area and deactivate the vacuum after placement.

    - Repeat the pick-and-place process until all components are mounted on the PCB. - Adjust the vacuum tube and component feeder positions as necessary to maintain fluid and efficient operation.

Once all components are placed, turn off the vacuum pump by tapping the foot switch. Inspect the PCB to ensure all components are correctly placed and aligned.

After each session, clean the pickup tips and suction cups. Ensure the vacuum tube is free of obstructions or kinks that could affect performance. Store component feeders, canisters, and pickup tips in an organized manner for future use.
