Front Idler Position - Check/Adjust
SystemOne Undercarriage
The following check is for Caterpillar SystemOne Undercarriages that have the center tread idler.
Check
The SystemOne undercarriage requires shim adjustment when the wear on the link and the roller system is at 25%, 50%, and 75%. Move a 4.5 mm (0.180 inch) shim from the bottom of the idler bearing block to the top.
Check the shim adjustment after moving the 4.5 mm (0.180 inch) shim.

Note: Be sure to add the same number of shims to both the left and right side so the idler will remain centered in the track roller frame.
Fine Tuning the Idler Height
If the machine performance remains unacceptable after the shim adjustments, try the following steps.

Ripper Linkage and Cylinder Bearings - Lubricate
Track - Check/Adjust
Check
If the track appears to be too tight or too loose, proceed to “Track Adjustment”.
Track Adjustment
! WARNING
Do not remove any parts until all pressure has been relieved to avoid possible personal injury. Relieve pressure by opening relief valve one turn maximum. See maintenance guide for track ad- justment procedure.
! WARNING
Grease is under high pressure.
Grease coming out of the relief valve under pres- sure can penetrate the body causing injury or death.
Do not watch the relief valve to see if grease is es- caping. Watch the track or track adjustment cylin- der to see if the track is being loosened.
Loosen the relief valve only one turn.

Track Pins - Inspect
! WARNING
Fingers can be burned from hot pins and bush- ings. The pins and bushings in a dry joint can become very hot. It is possible to burn the fingers if there is more than brief contact with these components.
Use the recommendations in order to extend the life of the undercarriage. Use the recommendations in order to avoid excessive downtime.
Consult your Caterpillar dealer's Custom Track Service expert if you detect dry joints or leaks. Your Caterpillar dealer's Custom Track Service expert can perform track inspection.
