Xytronic Fume Extractor With Iron Procedure

This SOP outlines the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures for the Xytronic 456DLX Fume Extractor with Iron, ensuring efficient fume extraction and soldering safety.

    Safety Precautions

Never touch the heated soldering iron tip or other hot parts during operation.

Always use the fume extractor to avoid inhaling toxic fumes generated during soldering.

    Pre-Operation Checks

    Setup

Turn On the Fume Extractor: Press the power switch on the unit to activate both the fume extractor and the soldering station. - The extractor should start immediately, ensuring hazardous fumes are captured. - Position the extractor’s intake as close to the soldering area as possible (approximately 6-8 inches).

Once the fume extractor is operational, turn on the soldering iron. Adjust the temperature control dial based on the material you are soldering (typically between 500°F and 800°F for most applications).

Adjust the temperature using the control dial. For most general soldering tasks, a temperature of 650°F to 750°F is recommended. - For lead-free solder, higher temperatures may be necessary (750°F - 800°F). - Always consult material guidelines to avoid overheating.

The Xytronic 456DLX features an indicator light showing when the desired temperature is reached.

    Soldering Procedure

Apply a small amount of solder to the heated soldering iron tip to improve heat transfer.

Position the Iron: Place the soldering iron tip on the component and pad you want to solder. Apply Solder: Feed the solder into the joint, allowing it to melt and flow smoothly. The solder should flow evenly and not form clumps. Ensure the fumes produced are being extracted efficiently by the fume extractor.

Regularly clean the tip using a brass cleaner or damp sponge during the soldering process to avoid oxidation and residue buildup.

If needed, adjust the fan speed of the extractor using the controls for optimal fume removal.

    Post-Operation Procedure

Once soldering is complete, switch off the soldering iron and allow it to cool down in the provided stand.

Once the soldering iron is off and fumes have cleared, power down the fume extractor.

Ensure the soldering iron has fully cooled before storing it.

Use a brass wire cleaner or wet sponge to clean the tip of any remaining solder or residue. Store the iron in a dry, safe place.
