Use this electrical inspection and maintenance checklists to ensure workplace is safe and to avoid hazards. This will also help you assess the compliance of electrical safety and streamline your guidelines.
Are workers wearing proper protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and sleeves?
Is protective grounding equipment provided and capable of carrying the maximum fault current that could flow at the point of grounding for the time necessary to clear the fault?
Are necessary switches opened, locked-out, and tagged before electrical equipment or lines are services, maintained, or adjusted?
Are safe work practices followed when workers must enter enclosed spaces?
Are portable electrical tools and equipment grounded or of the double-insulted type?
Are GFCI’s installed as required?
Are all temporary circuits protected by suitable disconnecting switches or plug connect at the junction with permanent wiring?
Are clamps or other securing means provided on flexible cords or cables at plugs, receptacles, tools, equipment, etc., and is the cord jacket securely held in place?
Are all cord, cable, and raceway connections intact and secure?
Are all electrical raceways and enclosures securely fastened in place?
Are all energized parts of electrical circuits and equipment guarded against accidental contact by approved cabinets or enclosures?
Is sufficient access and working space provided and maintained about all electrical equipment to permit ready and safe operations and maintenance?
Do motors driving machines or equipment which could cause injury from inadvertent starting, provide low voltage protection in the control device?
Is each motor disconnecting switch or circuit breaker located within sight of the motor control device?
Is mechanical equipment operated so that minimum approach distances from exposed energized lines and equipment are maintained?
Are all requirements followed for underground electrical installations when appropriate?
Are all requirements followed for substations when appropriate?
Are all requirements followed for power generating plants when appropriate?
Housekeeping
Are there exposed wiring and cords with frayed or deteriorated insulation?
First Aid
Are two or more employees trained in CPR methods available at field locations where employees are working on or associated with exposed lines or equipment energized at 50 volts or more?
At fixed work places, can each employee exposed to electric shock be reached by a person trained in CPR within 4 minutes?
Are employees prohibited from working alone on energized lines or equipment over 600 volts?
Are first aid kits easily accessible to each work area, with necessary supplies available, periodically inspected and replenished as needed?
In wet or damp locations, are electrical tools and equipment appropriate for the use or location or otherwise protected?
Fire Protection
Is the emergency numbers 544-4357 (4-HELP) and 911 (MSFC Network phone) posted?
Are electrical installations in hazardous dust or vapor areas? If so, do they meet NEC for hazardous locations?
Are appropriate fire extinguishers mounted, located and identified so that they are readily accessible to employees?
Are all fire extinguishers inspected and recharged regularly, and noted on the inspection tag?
Personal Protective Equipment
Are rubber protective gloves, sleeves, matting, blankets, hoods, or line hose provided as needed to protect against electric shock?
Is electrical protective equipment maintained in a safe and reliable condition?
Is appropriate fall protection equipment provided?
Are nonconductive ladders and platforms used near exposed energized lines or equipment?
Do employees who are exposed to flame or electric arc hazards wear clothing that will not increase the extent of potential injury?
Markings
Are all disconnecting switches and circuit breakers labeled to indicate their use or equipment served?
Is the manufacturer of electrical equipment identified on the equipment?
Are the necessary voltage, wattage, or current ratings labeled?
Do circuit breakers clearly indicate whether they are in the “on” or “off” position?
Are box covers permanently marked “High Voltage”?
Is electrical protective equipment marked according to class and type? (Class indicates appropriate voltage; type indicates ozone resistance.)
