KC-122FC 22" Drill Press Procedure
This SOP covers essential steps for safe operation, including pre-use checks, securing the workpiece, adjusting speed, drilling procedures, and post-operation cleanup. It also highlights regular maintenance and safety precautions for proper use.
- Safety Glasses: Must be ANSI Z87.1 approved. - Hearing Protection: Use ear protection when operating for extended periods. - Non-slip footwear: Recommended for proper footing. - Protective Clothing: Avoid loose clothing, jewelry, or gloves that could get caught in moving parts. - Dust Mask: Use if drilling operations generate dust.
Inspection: Ensure the machine is clean and free of dust or debris. Electrical Connection: Verify that the drill press is properly grounded and connected to the correct power supply (110V or 220V as per setup). Guards: Ensure that all protective guards are in place and functional. Chuck and Drill Bit: Ensure the drill bit is properly installed and securely tightened in the chuck. Workpiece Securing: Use a drill press vise to clamp the workpiece securely on the table.
Operational Procedure
- Adjust the table height using the table crank. - Position the workpiece on the table, ensuring backup material is underneath to prevent splintering. - Use the depth scale and adjustment nuts to set the desired drilling depth,
- Choose the correct spindle speed based on the material and drill bit size using the speed chart inside the belt guard. - Release the belt tension lock (by pulling it towards the front) and adjust the belt to the proper position. Retighten the belt tension lock once the correct tension is achieved.
- Turn the ON/OFF switch to the ON position. - Slowly lower the feed handle, applying moderate pressure to drill into the workpiece. Avoid forcing the drill to prevent bit damage or workpiece slippage. - When finished, release the feed handle and turn the machine OFF.
In the event of an electrical failure or emergency, immediately turn the drill press OFF and unplug it from the power source. Report any incidents or malfunctioning parts to a supervisor immediately.
Post-operation
Turn the power OFF and wait for the machine to come to a complete stop before making any adjustments or removing the workpiece.
Remove debris and apply a coat of furniture wax to the table and column to prevent rusting.
Refer to the troubleshooting guide in the manual if the drill press exhibits unusual behaviour such as excessive noise, drill bit slipping, workpiece tear-out, etc...
