This pre-use checklist intends to identify defects and safety hazards before operation. The main aim of a pre-start checklist inspection is to ensure that your equipment is safe to use.
This checklist provides a list of items operators must inspect and items they should also be aware of during a pre-start check each day. Operators should record that they’ve completed the check and any issues found.
In cab check
Is your seat functioning & adjusted correctly?
Turn the key to the on (or test if applicable) position
Are all lights, interlocks, warning devices and /or audible indicators or alarms functioning?
Does the horn work?
Are all gauges working (including fuel, oil, temperature, hour metre)?
Are back-up/ tramming alarms and rear camera (if fitted) working?
Are all windows clean & unbroken with wipers functioning?
Are all mirrors clean, unbroken and adjusted correctly?
Are any loose items in cab appropriately restrained?
Do you have any required paperwork/documentation?
Check all lights including rotating/tramming lights are functioning
Check fire extinguisher/suppression gauge(s) for serviceability and in date
Is Operator’s Manual present?
Is seat belt functioning and in date?
Machine walk around - Things to check
Take a careful walk around the machine, look for anything out of the ordinary especially the following:
Look underneath machine for water or oil leaks
Track condition and tension or tyre condition and pressure
All safety access points (steps, handholds and ROPS)
All fluid levels (hydraulic, slew motor, transfer case, transmissions, engine and coolant)
Engine belts and hoses condition and security
Cooling system is clean and unobstructed
Hydraulic hosings, fittings and cylinders for leaks, condition, security and damage.
Electrical cables & harnesses for condition and security
Air cleaner check indicator and pre-cleane
Grease points are adequately greased with minimal wear
Look for debris in and around engine, pump area, transmission, slew motor, control valves and belly guards
Quick-hitch and safety locking devices
Visible damage including loose or broken parts
Ground engaging tools (eg teeth/ cutting edges/ boots etc)
Check batteries are secure and clean
Check lights
Are they all functional, secure and undamaged?
Work Site Check
Safe access to work area
Overhead risks such as power-lines and trees
Recently filled trenches, uneven ground, slopes
Surrounding buildings
Bridges, causeways, dams or tidal activities
Dangerous materials eg fuel tanks
Test UHF channel for worksite communications
Identify fire fighting equipment
Underground services such as gas, sewer, fibreoptic
