LPKF ProtoPrint S Procedure

The LPKF ProtoPrint S SOP outlines the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting steps for precise SMT prototyping and short-run production.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Operators must wear protective gloves and, if handling hazardous materials like solder paste, safety goggles and protective clothing. Chemical Hazards: Soldering pastes and cleaners may contain hazardous substances. Refer to their respective safety data sheets (SDS) and ensure proper ventilation. Manual Handling: The printer weighs 30 kg (60 lbs). Use proper lifting techniques to avoid injury. Work Area: Maintain a clean and organized workspace to prevent accidents and ensure efficient operation.

    Operation

Place the PCB onto the center of the printing table. Secure the PCB: Clamp it using the holding pins or magnetic edge supports, depending on the PCB design.

Mount the stencil frame onto the adjustable support frames. Use the elevating/release lever to bring the PCB into contact with the stencil. Secure the stencil frame with toggle clamps.

Apply Solder Paste: Use a spade-blade to apply an adequate amount of solder paste to the stencil. Perform Test Print: - Hold the squeegee at a 45° angle. - Press down and move it over the stencil to transfer solder paste onto the PCB. - Verify the solder paste footprint. If required, make fine adjustments using the knobs.

Position the PCB with the stencil in place. Apply solder paste evenly over the stencil. Separate the PCB from the stencil using the elevating/release lever, ensuring a slow snap-off for optimal results. Remove the PCB and inspect the printed result.

    Maintenance and Cleaning

After Every Use: - Clean the stencil on both sides using isopropyl alcohol. - Use soft cloths or stencil wipes to remove solder paste residues. Printer Surface: Clean the surface of the printer with a mild detergent solution and a soft cloth.

Apply a thin layer of lithium grease to the guides every six months to ensure smooth movement. Inspect the micrometers and support frames regularly and make any necessary adjustments.

Common Issues and solutions: Horizontal table movement is difficult - Dust or lack of grease on guides. Clean and apply lithium grease Vertical table movement is blocked - Dust or lack of grease on guides. Clean and grease guides Test print screen won’t insert - Dust on pins or bushings. Clean and lightly grease pins and bushings For more information refer to manual
