Caterpillar D3K, D4K and D5K: Maintenance (Every 3000 Service Hours or 2 Year)

This includes the following types of coolants.

• Commercial long life coolants that meet the Caterpillar Engine Coolant Specification -1 (Caterpillar “EC−1”)

• Cat Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant (DEAC)

• Commercial heavy-duty antifreeze/coolant

Note: Level 1 results may indicate a need for Level 2 Analysis.

• Open the left engine access door.

• Open the access panel on top of the engine compartment.

• The cooling system pressure cap (1) is located on the top of expansion tank (2). Remove the cooling system pressure cap slowly in order to relieve system pressure.

• Obtain the coolant sample from the top tank and collect the sample into the proper sampling bottle.

Use the following guidelines for proper sampling of the coolant:

• Complete the information on the label for the sampling bottle before you begin to take the samples.

• Keep the unused sampling bottles stored in plastic bags.

• Obtain coolant samples directly from the coolant sample port. You should not obtain the samples from any other location.

• Keep the lids on empty sampling bottles until you are ready to collect the sample.

• Place the sample in the mailing tube immediately after obtaining the sample in order to avoid contamination.

• Never collect samples from expansion bottles.

• Never collect samples from the drain for a system.

• Maintain the coolant level between minimum mark (B) and maximum mark (A). Add coolant, if necessary.

• Install cooling system pressure cap (1) onto expansion tank (2). Close the access panel on top of the engine compartment. Close the left engine access door.

Observe the following guidelines if you attempt to clean the filter element:

• Do not tap or strike the filter element in order to re- move dust.

• Do not wash the filter element.

• Use low pressure compressed air in order to remove the dust from the filter element. Air pressure must not exceed 207 kPa (30 psi). Direct the air flow up the pleats and down the pleats from the inside of the filter element. Take extreme care in order to avoid damage to the pleats.

• Do not use air filters with damaged pleats, gaskets, or seals. Dirt entering the engine will cause damage to 4engine components.

• Open the engine access door on the left side of the machine.

• Loosen the four cover latches and remove the air cleaner cover.

• Remove primary filter element (3) from air cleaner housing (2). In order to remove the engine air filter primary element, slide the element outward. While you pull the element outward, rock the element.

• NOTICE: Do not use a filter if the media, the gaskets or the seals are damaged.

• Install clean primary filter element (3) over engine air filter secondary element (4). Apply firm pressure to the end of the primary element as you gently rock the filter element. This seats the primary element.

• Clean cover (5) and install the cover.

• Close the left engine access door.

• Start the engine. The indicator on the gauge cluster will illuminate when the filter needs attention.

Engine Air Filter Secondary Element - Replace

• Open the left engine access door.

• Remove the housing cover to the precleaner body assembly.

• Remove the secondary element. The secondary element is on the end of the air cleaner group away from the cab.

• Cover the air inlet opening. Clean the inside of the air cleaner housing.

• Inspect the gasket between the air inlet and the housing. If the gasket is damaged, replace the element.

• Uncover the air inlet opening. Install a new secondary element.

• Reinstall the primary air filter element. Reference: See “Engine Air Filter Primary Element - Clean/Replace” for more information.

• Install the air cleaner housing cover.

• Close the engine access door.
