Roller Troubleshooting Guide
Troubleshooting helps identify the symptoms, eliminate the potential cause of the problem, and require confirmation that the solution restores the product or process to its working state.
Purpose
1) Check the score knife, if found to be on one spindle, only change the internal knife, if found on multiple spindles, you may need to change the external score knife
2) Check the back center, the basic setting from the shop floor on most rollers is .012. Check what your gap specification is
3) Cap not loading on spindle correct will cause whiskers. Check loading.
4) If this does not resolve the issue, contact the machine shop.
1) Check a cap out of the press going to roller for scrap.
2) Change the external score knife.
3) Change internal knife.
4) Score knife not seated correctly on tooling block.
5) Spindle housing too far on the high side, check go/no go gage.
6) If this does not resolve the issue, contact the machine shop. Have the machine shop check with a paper cut, on the internal and external score knives, to see if the turret has moved.
Nesting
1) Check the spindle eccentric bushing’s position, if it’s too far down it will create a small knurl, and if too far up, it will create a larger flare.
2) Check the tool block flare tool position.
3) Check the back center and make sure tools are seated in tooling block.
1) First, check your shells coming out of the press for proper height.
2) Verify that a spindle is causing the issue, if due to multiple spindles, it could possibly be the loading/unloading chute.
3) Check the external score knife and verify that it is down on the tooling block.
4) Cap hanging up on internal score knife.
5) External knife too high, not seated on tooling block.
6) Loading wrong on spindle.
7) The brass wedge has moved on the exit chute.
8) Check the slide for grease, if grease needs applied do so - DO NOT OVER GREASE.
9) Check for wear on the slide.
10) Check the length of the knockout rod by comparing it to the other knockout rods.
11) If this does not resolve the issue, contact the machine shop.
Broken Bridges
1) Check the knife on the tooling block to make sure it is the correct knife.
2) Check the spindle housing setting on the eccentric bushing height.
3) Check the tooling on the tooling block.
4) If this does not resolve the issue, contact the machine shop.
Liner fallout
1) Roll groove to tight, and not letting the liner seat in cap.
2) Roll groove too loose, the liner falls out.
Check lining machine punches and the seating rods for right depth
4) If this does not resolve the issue, contact the machine shop.
Roll Groove Not Fitting (check with go/no go gage)
1) Spindle too far down in turret, if too tight.
2) Spindle too far on the high side if too loose.
3) Roll groove tool not seated on tooling block if too tight.
4) Knurls not aligned, roll groove too tight or loose.
5) Back center needs adjusted, (especially on the 18mm and 30mm)
6) If this does not resolve the issue, contact the machine shop.
Knurl Alignment
1) Pin is not all the way through on tooling block to align top and bottom knurl.
2) ALWAYS USE AN EXTERNAL KNURL TO ALIGN INSTEAD OF A VENTED KNURL TOOL………. If running a vented knurl tool, put back in.
3) Knurls are off, adjust to line up male to female on the knurls.
4) Knurls on internal knurl tool may be chipped, or external knurl tool could be worn out.
Key, or the keyway, may be worn out. Put a new key in, or new external knurl tool. Also, measure the height of the internal knurl, and match it up with the old tool’s height (machine shop will grind the internal knurl).
False Bead
1) Check flare tool on external tooling block, may be worn, or not seated properly.
2) Spindle may not be down far enough to form a bead.
3) Flare tool is too small, the height.
4) If this does not resolve the issue, contact the machine shop.
