Restroom Exhaust Fans
Use this guide for the quarterly cleaning of your exhaust fan
1. 6' Ladder 2. Flashlight 3. Phillips head screwdriver 4. Small handheld shop vacuum 5. Rag
Restroom checklist:
Step 1. Block restroom door in the open position with a caution sign and power the fan down. Step 2. Setup ladder under exhaust fan and remove the fan cover by pulling the cover down and away from the ceiling tile. Once the cover is opened enough to expose the fan cover latches pinch the 2 wires together and pull down until the cover comes off. Step 3. Inspect the fan impeller. If the fan blades are dirty use the rag and vacuum to clean out all dust and debris spinning the fan blades to shake loose any debris stuck in place. Remove adjacent ceiling tile from the T grid and slide the exhaust vent out of the fan motor vent clips and set aside. Continuing to spin the fan blades use the shop vac from the exhaust port to remove any remaining debris. *NOTE* For the Assembly Men's room only - Disconnect the wire connector and loosen the 2 wing nuts holding the rotary unit in place. Lower the unit and clean the unit as well as the box it sits in. The felt sidewalls will get a lot of dust/debris stuck to it as well as on the dampeners (2). Step 4. Inspect the dampener on the exhaust vent to ensure it opens and closes freely. Wipe down with a rag if necessary. Step 5. Ensure the fan is put back together with the vent cover. Vent cover should be wiped down (both sides). Step 6. Turn the fan on to ensure it works, and return all tools/signs used.
